How long before departure should I be at the airport?

Updated: 23 April 2026 · We update this guide regularly – security queues and check-in desk opening times can vary depending on season and airport.

Arriving too early at the airport means hours of waiting – arriving too late means frantic rushing and in the worst case, a missed flight. We'll show you the optimal arrival time for each destination, airport and airline. Plus: 5 practical tips for an even more relaxed journey through check-in and security.

How early you should arrive at the airport before departure

90 min
Domestic Flight
UK & Schengen

Check-in often online, short security, no passport control

2 hrs
EU / Europe
European destinations

Standard check-in, security, boarding – buffer for unexpected delays

3 hrs
Long-haul
USA, Asia, Africa

Passport and security checks, customs, long queues during peak times

Important: These times are guidelines. During summer holidays, at weekends and during major events (fairs, sporting events), you should arrive 30–60 minutes earlier at the airport.

How early at major UK airports?

UK airports have different throughput capacities and waiting times. Here's our overview of the five busiest locations:

Airport Domestic / EU Long-haul Special features
London Heathrow (LHR) 2 hrs 3 hrs World's busiest, long security queues during peak times
London Gatwick (LGW) 2 hrs 3 hrs CT scanners available, security often faster
Manchester (MAN) 90 min 2.5 hrs Usually relaxed, can get busy during school holidays
Edinburgh (EDI) 90 min 2.5 hrs Compact airport, short distances
Birmingham (BHX) 2 hrs 2.5 hrs Large airport, security busy during peak hours

London Heathrow (LHR) – UK's busiest hub

Heathrow Airport is the busiest in the UK with 80+ million passengers annually. Queue times can be correspondingly long. Plan for 2 hours for European flights, 3 hours for long-haul. On peak days (Friday and Sunday evenings, start of holidays) allow an extra 30 minutes. Advantage: Heathrow has five terminals with good connections and new CT scanners at many security lanes, which also allow liquids over 100ml.

London Gatwick (LGW) – efficiency over queues

Gatwick is considered one of the most efficient airports in the UK. CT scanners are widely deployed – making security checks much easier. 90 minutes to 2 hours before domestic/EU flights, 3 hours for long-haul is sufficient.

Manchester (MAN) – compact but traffic-prone

Manchester is manageable: it's rarely more than 10 minutes' walk from security to the gate. Still plan 90 minutes (EU) or 2.5 hours (long-haul). Main issue: getting there by car from the motorway network – rush hour traffic or roadworks can disrupt your timing.

Edinburgh (EDI) – fast through security
