Which brand suits you best?

Samsonite is the global market leader and uses pure Makrolon polycarbonate with a guarantee of up to 10 years – the safe choice for frequent travellers. Titan impresses with German craftsmanship and well-thought-out features, and has been one of the most popular brands amongst our regular customers for years. American Tourister, as a Samsonite subsidiary, offers the same quality standards at a more affordable price.

If you’re looking for good value for money, Travelite, starting from €49, is an excellent choice. Delsey combines French design with the patented ZIP SECURI TECH security system. For Italian elegance and durable craftsmanship, we recommend Bric’s and Roncato. We also stock, amongst others, Stratic and Victorinox – every brand in our range has a distinct identity. Suitcase guide: How to find the right luggage

Choosing the right suitcase isn’t a matter of taste, but depends on three factors: duration of your trip, mode of transport and destination. We have been answering these questions every day since 2007 through our advisory and sales services – and it is precisely this knowledge that you will find on this page: from a volume guide through questions about materials and wheels to packing tips, price ranges and our after-sales service. After all, there is no such thing as the one perfect suitcase – but there is the right one for every type of trip.

The right suitcase size according to the duration of your trip

We estimate a suitcase volume of around 50 litres per week of holiday. For winter trips with thick clothing, you should allow 30–40 per cent more space; the same applies to business trips involving suits and shirts.

• Hand luggage (S): 55 cm, 30–40 litres – for 2–5 days or as a supplement to checked luggage
• Medium (M): 60–69 cm, 60–80 litres – the best-selling size for a standard 1–2-week holiday
• Large (L): 70–79 cm, 90–110 litres – suitable for two- to three-week trips or winter holidays
• Extra large (XL): 80+ cm, 120+ litres – long-term travel or family holidays

Practical tip from our advisory service: Try packing your suitcase 2–3 days before departure. This way, you’ll realise in good time whether the size is right – and can exchange it at your leisure, rather than having to improvise on the day of departure. Also, pay attention to the weight of the suitcase itself: a cabin bag should weigh no more than 2.5–3 kg when empty, whilst a medium-sized model should weigh no more than 3.5–4 kg. Hard-shell suitcases or soft-sided luggage?

Hard-shell suitcases made from polycarbonate offer maximum protection: They are waterproof, shatterproof and can be stacked to save space – ideal if you’re flying or transporting fragile items. Soft-sided luggage weighs less, gives way flexibly thanks to its expansion gusset and features external pockets for quick access – the better choice for car and train journeys. Around 65% of our customers opt for hard-shell luggage because most are buying it primarily for air travel.

In a direct comparison, this means that hard-shell suitcases, with their welded, waterproof shells, also provide reliable protection for electronics, glassware and souvenirs; they can be stacked and are easy to wipe clean – however, they are rigid and usually weigh 3.5–5 kg in size M. Soft-sided suitcases weigh just 2.5–4 kg, can be expanded using a stretch panel and feature external pockets for documents and small items – however, the fabric is only water-repellent, not waterproof. If you repack frequently or travel by car, you’re better off with a soft-sided case; if you’re flying, go for the hard-shell case.

4 wheels or 2 wheels?

4-wheel suitcases (spinners) respond to even the lightest touch in any direction and roll alongside you of their own accord – ideal for airports and smooth floors. 2-wheel suitcases have larger, more robust wheels and do not tip over when stationary – the better choice for cobbled streets and uneven surfaces. Around 78 per cent of our customers now choose 4-wheel suitcases, as modern dual-wheel systems run smoothly even on uneven ground.

4-wheel suitcases in detail: Spinners rotate 360 degrees, taking the strain off your arm and shoulder because the suitcase rolls upright alongside you, and are more manoeuvrable in narrow aisles. Just bear in mind: they can roll away on inclines – which is why high-quality models have a locking brake. 2-wheel systems in detail: The larger, often rubber-coated wheels cope better with gravel and cobblestones, but the suitcase must be tilted and pulled to do so. What to look for in both systems: smooth-running, wobble-free wheels with a rubberised tread for quiet operation – and ideally twin wheels (eight wheels in the 4-wheel system) for greater stability.

Material: polycarbonate, ABS or aluminium?

Polycarbonate is the premium material: extremely impact-resistant, feather-light and returns to its original shape after being bent. Samsonite and Titan use pure Makrolon polycarbonate. ABS is the more affordable alternative – a solid choice for occasional travellers, but heavier and less flexible. Aluminium stands for durability and elegant design, but is significantly heavier. Our recommendation: polycarbonate is worth it for frequent travellers; for 1–2 trips a year, ABS is sufficient.

In figures: A medium-sized polycarbonate suitcase weighs around 3–4 kg, lasts 10 years or more with proper care and costs around 20–30% more than ABS. ABS models weigh around 4–5 kg and can break if subjected to heavy impacts, whilst polycarbonate bends and springs back into shape. Aluminium suitcases are the heaviest at 5–7 kg and the most expensive at €300–1,000 – but they last 20 years or more; dents can be hammered out and are part of the character of this material. For soft luggage, the following applies: It should be made of at least 600D polyester, preferably 1200D – the fabric determines the lifespan.

Expansion feature: an expandable panel for up to 25 per cent more volume

Many suitcases feature an expansion panel (expander) that increases the volume by up to 25 per cent – worth its weight in gold when you’re returning with souvenirs or shopping. This feature is common in soft-sided luggage, but is also available on hard-shell models. Make sure that the expansion doesn’t compromise stability: high-quality models reinforce the expansion panel with additional stitching. And bear in mind that an expanded suitcase may exceed the airline’s hand luggage dimensions – so it’s best to use the expansion feature on the outbound journey as a reserve.

TSA lock: Securely locked when travelling by air

TSA stands for Transport Security Administration, the US transport security agency. The background: When travelling to the USA or on transit flights via US airports, security staff are authorised to inspect your suitcase. A standard lock will be broken open without compensation – whereas officials can open a TSA lock using a master key, without damaging your luggage. You’ll still be protected against theft.

A TSA lock is therefore strongly recommended for travel to the US, but is also useful for all other international flights: it offers greater security than simple combination locks and is recognised internationally. You can recognise it by the red diamond-shaped logo on the lock. It’s easy to use: you set a three- or four-digit code – only you and the security authorities can open the suitcase. Many current models from Samsonite, Titan or Travelite already have it built in; if not, a TSA padlock can be fitted for around €8, which you can find, along with other accessories, in our Travel Accessories category.

How much does a good suitcase cost? An overview of the price ranges

The price says a lot about the materials, workmanship and durability. To help you understand the price ranges, here is our honest assessment from specialist retailers:

• Budget segment (€40–80): ABS hard-shell or simple polyester. Perfectly adequate for occasional travellers taking 1–2 trips a year, with a lifespan of around 3–5 years. You’ll find solid entry-level models from, for example, Travelite.
• Mid-range (€80–150): Polycarbonate or high-quality nylon, with a lifespan of 5–8 years. This offers the best value for money – typical brands include Travelite, Titan and American Tourister. Our recommendation for anyone who travels 3–5 times a year.
• Premium segment (€150–400): Pure Makrolon polycarbonate or aluminium, lifespan 10–15 years and a long manufacturer’s warranty. Brands in this category include Samsonite, Delsey, Bric’s and Porsche Design.

The calculation we show customers in-store: A premium suitcase costing €180 works out at €18 per year over 10 years’ use. A budget model for €50 works out at €12.50 per year over 4 years. The difference of €5.50 per year gets you significantly better wheels and zips – and a manufacturer that supplies replacement parts. If you’re on a budget, you’ll regularly find reduced-price branded models in our suitcase sale – for us, buying cheaply means branded quality at a reduced price, not no-name goods.

Packing the right way: Packing tips from our advisory practice

With a systematic approach, you’ll create significantly more space in the same suitcase – and arrive with crease-free clothes. Our tried-and-tested method from our daily advisory work:

• Draw up your packing list 2–3 days in advance – and then cross off about 20 per cent. Choose clothes that can be mixed and matched.
• Roll rather than fold: Roll T-shirts, trousers and dresses up tightly. This saves up to 30 per cent of space, reduces creases and helps you keep track of everything.
• Place heavy items on the side with the rolled-up clothes: Shoes, books and your toiletries bag should go at the bottom. This keeps the centre of gravity low and prevents the suitcase from tipping over.
• Use packing cubes: They compress clothes, organise them by category and make it easier to unpack at your hotel – you’ll find them in our travel accessories.
• Make use of empty spaces: Stuff socks and underwear into your shoes, and lay belts along the edge of the suitcase.
• Place delicate items in the centre: Nestle shirts and blouses between soft layers; jackets and jumpers as the top, cushioning layer.
• Put documents and valuables in the top compartment – or straight into your hand luggage.

And the most important tip to finish with: Set your fully packed suitcase aside for a day and then go through the list again. Experience shows that you’re bound to forget something on the morning of your departure.

Warranty, repairs and spare parts: what sets specialist retailers apart

A branded suitcase is a purchase that will last for many years – and that is precisely why our responsibility does not end at the till. Our advice right from the moment of purchase: check whether the manufacturer keeps parts in stock for years – this is the case with established brands such as Samsonite, Titan, Travelite and Delsey.
