Which Material for Your Hard Shell Suitcase?
The material determines the weight, stability and durability of your suitcase. Here's an overview of the key options:
- Polycarbonate: Extremely lightweight and flexible – absorbs impacts without breaking. The most popular material for modern hard shell suitcases. Ideal for frequent flyers.
- Polypropylene: Particularly impact-resistant and durable. Withstands rough luggage handling and is recyclable.
- ABS: Affordable and lightweight option for occasional travellers. Solid entry-level material.

Hard Shell or Soft Luggage – Which Suits Your Trip?
Hard shell suitcases offer the best protection for delicate items, are more waterproof and stackable – ideal for air travel. Soft luggage is lighter, more flexible with expansion gussets and offers external pockets for quick access. You'll find a detailed comparison in our guide Hard Shell or Soft Shell.
4 Wheels or 2 Wheels?
Hard shell suitcases with 4 wheels (spinners) can be pushed in any direction with one finger – ideal for airport corridors. Hard shell suitcases with 2 wheels have larger, more robust wheels and are better suited for cobblestones.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hard Shell Suitcases
Are hard shell suitcases better than soft luggage?
Hard shell suitcases offer better protection, are more waterproof and stackable – ideal for air travel and delicate luggage. Soft luggage is lighter, more flexible and has external pockets for quick access. For frequent flyers and checked luggage we recommend hard shell, for train and car journeys often soft luggage.
Which material is best for hard shell suitcases?
Polycarbonate is the premium material: extremely lightweight, impact-resistant and absorbs shocks. Polypropylene is more robust and recyclable, but slightly heavier. ABS is the most affordable option, about 30% heavier and less flexible. Aluminium is most stable, but significantly heavier and more expensive. For frequent travellers, polycarbonate is worthwhile.
What size hard shell suitcase for 1 week's holiday?
For 1 week's holiday we recommend a hard shell suitcase in size M (60–69 cm height, 60–80 litres). This is sufficient for 7–10 outfits plus shoes and toiletries bag. For winter trips with thick clothing, choose size L (70–79 cm). Calculate approximately 50 litres of suitcase volume per week of holiday.
Are hard shell suitcases waterproof?
Hard shell suitcases are splash-proof, but not completely waterproof. The outer shell made of polycarbonate or polypropylene easily withstands light rain. However, water can enter through zips or lock areas. For tropical tours or boat trips we additionally recommend a waterproof inner cover.
What's the difference between a hard shell suitcase and hard shell trolley?
There is no difference – both terms refer to the same product. A hard shell trolley is a hard shell suitcase with wheels and an extendable telescopic handle. Since virtually all hard shell suitcases have wheels today, the terms are synonymous.
Which hard shell suitcases are suitable for air travel?
For air travel, hard shell suitcases made of polycarbonate or polypropylene with TSA locks are best suited. Pay attention to your airline's size restrictions: cabin luggage max. 55×40×20 cm, checked luggage usually up to 158 cm total dimensions. Details on airline dimensions can be found in our cabin luggage guides.
